Following the power outages experienced in mid 1990s due to depletion in the Ceylon Electricity Board generation capacity and the rising demand for electricity, the Government of Sri Lanka opened the electricity generation sector to private and institutional investors. This development initiative, which included funding from multilateral agencies and incentives to promote private sector participation in the sector, catalysed the industry. Accordingly, our Company was incorporated in November 2001 to generate and supply electric power to the national grid on a BOO basis.
The company was incorporated on 7th of November 2001 under the name of 'Zyrex Power Company Erathna Limited' and later changed its name to 'Power Company Erathna Limited' on 14th of October 2004. Thereafter on 2nd of June 2005 the name of the company was changed to 'Vallibel Power Erathna Limited'. The shares of the company were listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange on 17th of May 2006.
In November 2009, Company acquired Country Energy Pvt Ltd. At the time of acquisition, Denawaka Ganaga and Kiriwaneliya projects were in their initial stages.
