In tackling the increasingly serious issue of global warming, CO2 reduction has become every corporation's responsibility. Vallibel Power Erathna PLC has taken the lead in balancing power generation and environmental protection in Sri Lanka.

As hydro power plants do not emit carbon dioxide, Vallibel Power Erathna PLC is contributing to emission reduction in a significant way. The entire output of the power plant is sold to the national utility company (Ceylon Electricity Board) and as a result, they do not have to purchase or produce energy from thermal sources equivalent to the generation capacity of our power plant. In fact, our operations are equivalent to reducing approximately 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emission annually.

Undoubtedly one of the most crucial environmental requirements of authorities is that only part of the water flow of the river can be captured for hydro power. In order to sustain healthy aquatic and plant life in the river and surrounding area, and maintain supply to the local community, the flow of the river must not be interrupted. The environmental authority also specifies that sound should be maintained at a maximum of 60dB in the Power House vicinity to minimise noise pollution. Vallibel Power Erathna is scrupulous in adhering to these stipulations. We are also considering tree planting in areas around the river and upstream – a significant step towards reducing CO2 emission.

Underground tanks have been built beneath the transformers to collect and prevent any oil leakage from the transformers coming into contact with the river water. This ensures there is no contamination of the river. Further, no fuel is used in hydro electric power generation and therefore emissions such as those from gasoline, diesel or propane generators are absent.
